John, you were right! I'm in love with my Guild F50 again. The single notes project and the tone is fantastic. It plays so nice. I don't think this guitar was ever this good.
It inspires me again.
Thank you so much!!

Alec Sokolow - Saturday, August 28th, 2010
My son and I are new customers of John's. We have been trying to "build" a guitar at home and failing comically. But, we just spent a mesmerizing afternoon in John's workshop as he built my son's dream guitar before our very eyes!!! He allowed us to hang out and watch the entire process. Our minds were blown by how cool and available John was. We've got some sanding, painting and wiring to do before our baby is finished, but when it is, we're going to drop back in so my son can melt his face. Thanks, John. You rock!!!

jeff stanley - Thursday, July 15th, 2010
I've been a customer of John's since I was a teenager in bands in LA in the '70s. We used to go down th the shop and just hang out- he was always so gracious and a master craftsman, worked on my 55 Strat and 57 Gold Top. John built a one-off 82 Strat with '57 electrics back then. I have asked him recently to write an authentication of this guitar for me, as it is quite unique. In 1982, John was hired by Feneder to develop a new Tremelo system for the Strat. While at the factory, he hand selected a maple neck and body from bins and bins of such, and built the guitar. I've had it to this day, and it's like new cond. Thank you John.

JOHN KOLER - Friday, July 2nd, 2010
I had the honor of meeting Mr Carruthers at El Camino College where he was giving a set-up demonstration. He was generous with his time, wisdom and talents. He is a treasure to his craft.

Paul Hipp - Thursday, April 15th, 2010
Hi John!

It is 3:30AM and I have been playing my Strat since I picked it up from you today!! You have transformed this guitar and brought it to life. Beyond my expectations!! I appreciate your great work and artistry! I also enjoyed talking with you today at the shop about guitars and different strategies to save the world!!

Thanks John, for the care and the soul!

graham dorsey - Thursday, April 15th, 2010
My name is Graham Dorsey. I have two five string basses. One was built in 1990 and the other in 1991. I have two Grammy nominations and three studios regularly use samples of both basses.

I am a saxophone player and play bass on everything I record

p.s. Big Jim sold me both axes. I play them with pride!

Jaime Gomez - Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I just want to say thank you for selling me the first / # one CS guitar when you start your first line of production. Correct me if i'm wrong because at the moment i don't have my guitar specs in front of me, and I want to say the CS-1 model.

However, i've been playing this guitar so long that I can say It's not really the model number that makes the difference, but the attention to detail that you put into your guitars.

When I bought my guitar from you, it was the first time I realized what a high quality guitars or custom made guitar was. Also, its from my perspective and experience in play my guitar or the guitars right there at your shop. That there is a distinct and mysterious quality from every guitar you make. I don't let anyone else fix or make adjustments to my guitars except the Carruthers Guitar Shop.

Once again,

Thank you.

LeBurn Maddox - Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
Way back in 1982-85 I was a homeless "Dreadlocked Busker" on Venice Beach. John used to allow me to work on my own guitars in his shop as I had little money to pay him for services rendered. He would on ocassion advanced me strings and valves until I earned enough on the Beach to pay him back. Since that time I've toured & lived all over Calif, China, Hong Kong and now Great Britain. I've opened shows for Jeff Healy, Chaka Khan, Debbie Harry & Blondie, Joss Stone, Oli Brown, Jonny Greenwood and countless others. Thanks John for your kindness, generosity and for making such lovely guitars. Your contibution to the trade and to the art is massive. I'll stop in and buy a guitar from you the next time I fly over to Calif. Till then, be well. LeBurn Maddox, Somerset, England

O.J. Cartaya, MD - Monday, August 10th, 2009
If you meet John Carruthers you will experience an individual who is extraordinary and rare. His talent speaks for itself - others can speak with more authority to his legacy (he has one).
This gentleman's integrity and character are disarming and utterly authentic. I've known John for 15 years, and can think of precious few people who project such an unassuming and intensely remarkable sense of character. He is a man who you can trust. I don't think that I have ever gone out of my way to say that about someone.
Go figure...

Hi John, Back in the late 80's I visited your shop looking for a strat-style body and replacement neck. The body you made fits and feels like a part of me and you modeled my original neck perfectly. 20 years and a few colors later, this guitar continues to be the best sounding, best fitting and easily playable axe I've ever owned. Just Amazing. Thank you!

Carruthers Guitars - Thursday, February 12th, 2009
Fleetwood Mac is getting ready for a major tour, and we've prepared almost all their guitars. Marshall Electronics came through with their Mogami wire in record time to make new specialized MIDI cables for Lindsey Buckingham. We use the 7-pair 28awg twisted OV/BR/SH cable to make the 30-foot drops. Marshall Electronics is a premiere electronics components manufacturer and dealer in Los Angeles (310-333-0606), and Phil Tennison is one of the most knowledgeable folks there! We hope that you'll enjoy the upcoming tour, and you'll see our Guitars (Baritone ACS's, our neck on his white Strat, others) and the cables!

Mitchell Bergen - Thursday, January 22nd, 2009
After playing nothing but my Carruthers CB-5 and CB-4 for the last two years, I thought I'd revisit my stable of basses for a recent recording project. Nothing compares to the sound and playability of my Carruthers bass. I recorded the same parts with a few different basses and in every case, the Carruthers was preferred by musicians non-musicians. The bass sits well in the mix. I don't know how to explain it, but there were no 'bad overtones' that were present in some of the other basses. The notes were pure. Okay, bad explanation - how about this? My other basses are going up for sale. Carruthers makes the best instruments I've ever played, period. Thanks, guys, for making an instrument that brought back the joy of playing for me.

Jess - Friday, December 19th, 2008
I got a surprise early Christmas present, from a very good friend, the other day.

An awesome Carruthers strat style with a reverse headstock, two JB Jr's and a '59 full size humbucker.

I own several guitars of famous names and some "Frankesteins" that I modified in an seemingly unending quest for THE tone.

This guitar has got IT. The search is over.

Absolutely amazing!

PS… Any body interested in buying various used Fender and Gibson guitars?

James McAllister, St. Mary's, PA - Thursday, April 24th, 2008

I recently purchased Alfred's DVD on guitar maintenance and I'd just like to say thanks for participating in this very educational DVD. I am embarassed to say that after 20 years of playing the guitar, I never knew how to change strings correctly. Subjects like adjusting the truss rod and intonation scared the hell out of fearing that I might do something wrong and forever ruin the guitar. Thanks to your DVD I am not setting up my guitars and they sound great. I'm not the type of person to write letters like this but you DVD was so beneficial that I couldnt help myself. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

Best Regards,

Jim McAllister

Eddie Tuleja

John, that baritone guitar you made for me gives people shivers up and down their spines. I can't tell you how beautiful an instrument it is. I'm putting it through a Roland Jazz Chorus at the moment. There has been a latter day manic interest in my old band King Harvest because Walmart has picked up our hit, "Dancin' in the Moonlight" for their promo tune this year and because we finally got the master rights back. I'm in LA mid June. I'll come by the shop. Thanks so much, Eddie Tuleja

Chris Nagakawa - Wednesday, April 16th, 2008
Hey John, Rick, and Raphael,

I just wanted to thank the three of you for the excellent customer service and work on my Epiphone Les Paul Studio and SG. The skinny-heavy setup, the perfectly low action, and the awesome fret repair make the guitars feel like an extension of my body. The high notes on the SG finally ring! I haven't been able to put down the guitars since I got them back. I have blisters underneath my calluses, but I can't stop playing because you made it feel so easy.

I know you've worked with numerous major recording artists in your 40 years in business. Thank you for treating me like one of them!

-- Chris
